  • Raj Thackeray Says “Only Marathi, English Should Be Taught From 1st Grade”

For the past nearly two months, there has been confusion regarding the teaching of the Hindi language starting from the first grade in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray on Wednesday appealed to state School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse to issue a written order “as soon as possible” stating that only two languages, Marathi and English, would be taught from the first grade and Hindi would not be made compulsory as third language.

“We have information that based on the earlier decision to teach three languages, including Hindi, the printing of Hindi language textbooks has already begun. Now that the books have been printed, is the government planning to backtrack on its own decision? I assume there is no such plan, but if something like this happens, the government will be responsible for the agitation that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will launch,” the MNS chief said.

“Many states in the country have adopted only two languages from the first grade and rejected the imposition of Hindi, the reason being their linguistic identity. You (addressing Bhuse) and your fellow Cabinet members are also Marathi by birth; when will you act like the leaders of other states who oppose Hindi and protect the identity of your language, and how will you nurture it? We expect the government to show the same strong sense of identity as those other states,” he said.

For the past nearly two months, there has been confusion regarding the teaching of the Hindi language starting from the first grade in Maharashtra.

Initially, it was announced that students would be taught three languages from the first grade, with Hindi being the third mandatory language. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena raised its voice against this, which led to the formation of strong public sentiment.

“This public sentiment was so intense that the government declared that Hindi would not be made mandatory as the third language,” Raj Thackeray said.

“Fundamentally, Hindi is not a national language; it is just one of the languages spoken in other states of the country. Why was there an insistence on making it mandatory to learn? It is unclear why the government was wavering under some pressure. However, the core issue remains: why force children to learn three languages from first grade?

“Regarding this, you also announced that in schools following the Maharashtra State Education Board curriculum, only two languages would be taught from the first grade. But why has the written order for this announcement not been issued yet?” asked Thackeray.

His letter comes at a time when the government has backtracked on its move to make Hindi language compulsory after Marathi and English in Classes 1 to 5 amid strong opposition from various stakeholders.

Although Mr Bhuse last month announced that the government would take a decision on making Hindi a third language compulsory after talks, it has not yet issued any government notification.

  • “It Is In Your DNA”: JP Nadda Slams Rahul Gandhi’s Surrender Remark

In a series of posts on X, Mr Nadda responded to Congress MP’s “Narender-Surrender” jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a convention of Congress workers in Madhya Pradesh and alleged that PM Modi had surrendered to US pressure for a ceasefire with Pakistan.

BJP National President and Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Wednesday slammed Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of insulting the Indian Army by terming the success of Operation Sindoor a “surrender”, noting that ‘surrender’ was in the dictionary of Congress and in Rahul Gandhi’s DNA.

He listed historical instances like the Shimla Agreement, the Indus Waters Treaty, and the 1962 war, alleging that Congress consistently capitulated, including to the Muslim League during India’s independence.

“Rahul Gandhi, you may have surrendered; your party may have surrendered; your leaders may have surrendered because your history has been like this but India never surrenders. Surrender is in the dictionary of your party Congress; it is in your DNA. Rahul Gandhi, you should remember the tenure of your party’s governments and how you ‘surrendered’ in history. You surrendered to terrorism, surrendered in Sharm-al-Shekh, surrendered at the table in Shimla after winning the 1971 war, surrendered in the Indus Water Treaty, surrendered Haji Pir Pass, surrendered 160 km area of Chhamb sector, surrendered in the 1962 war, surrendered in 1948 and even surrendered to the Muslim League at the time of independence of the country,” Mr Nadda stated.

Mr Nadda further condemned the Congress leader’s remark as treasonous and highlighted that even Pakistan did not dare to make such a claim.

“Rahul Gandhi’s calling the unmatched valour and courage of the Indian Army a ‘surrender’ is not only unfortunate but also a grave insult to the Indian Army, the nation and 140 crore Indians. If any Pakistani had said this, we would have laughed at them, but after the way Operation Sindoor wreaked havoc in Pakistan, no one from the people of Pakistan, its army and even its Prime Minister dared to say this, but Rahul Gandhi is saying this! This is nothing less than treason,” the BJP National President added.

Mr Nadda also detailed the success of Operation Sindoor, noting the Indian Army’s deep penetration into Pakistan, destruction of airbases and terrorist camps, and the killing of over 150 terrorists, as validated by senior army officers.

“The Indian Army penetrated 300 km into Pakistan and destroyed 11 of its airbases, demolished 9 terrorist bases, killed more than 150 terrorists. Pakistan is crying and telling the world that the Indian Army attacked 18 places in Pakistan and destroyed everything and Rahul Gandhi is talking about the surrender of the country! Rahul Gandhi should know that the success of “Operation Sindoor” was not announced by the government or any BJP spokesperson, but by senior officers of the Indian Army. “Operation Sindoor” is a proclamation of the bravery, courage and valour of the Indian Army. In reality, those whose policies have been of surrender cannot think of anything beyond this – why, isn’t it so with Rahul Gandhi?” he added.

This comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP-led government on Tuesday over allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor.

He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “followed” Donald Trump following a call by the US leader and that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not budge to the US in the 1971 war.

Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, LoP Rahul Gandhi said, “Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. They run away out of fear if slight pressure is put on them. When Trump called Modiji- Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with ‘ji hazooor’, Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet (which came from the US), India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had the habit of writing letters of surrender.”

  • White House Defends Trump Mega-Bill After Elon Musk Attack

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill” — the centerpiece of his domestic agenda — would add a giant $2.4 trillion to the US deficit by 2034.

The White House on Wednesday blasted a prediction that Donald Trump’s policy mega-bill could send the deficit soaring, as Elon Musk doubled down on his criticism of the US president’s plans.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill” — the centerpiece of his domestic agenda — would add a giant $2.4 trillion to the US deficit by 2034.

Trump’s combative Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller slammed the independent watchdog on social media as “lefty” — echoing the administration’s frequent line of attack against its opponents.

“We are in a very good place with the bill,” said Russ Vought, head of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, which did the sums for Trump’s bill.

He told reporters on a call that the congressional office’s prediction “does not reflect reality.”

But the package, which could define Trump’s second term and make or break Republican prospects in the 2026 midterms, is getting a rough ride in the US Congress.

The plan would fund an extension of Trump’s 2017 tax relief from his first term in the White House by piling on debt and cutting social welfare for the poorest Americans.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who departed as head of Trump’s cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency last week amid growing tensions, issued fresh criticism on Wednesday.

“KILL the BILL,” the South African-born tycoon posted on his X social network, following it up with a meme showing the blood-soaked Quentin Tarantino movie “Kill Bill” and its star Uma Thurman.

Musk had called the bill a “disgusting abomination” on Tuesday.

The bill passed the House of Representatives last week but now faces a difficult path through the US Senate.

A group of US senators visited the White House on Wednesday as the negotiations entered a crucial stage, with Trump urging the Senate to vote on it by July 4.

“Failure is not an option,” Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters outside the West Wing.

Asked about Musk’s claims that it would balloon the deficit, he replied: “We believe the opposite.”

  • “Operation Sindoor Was Brilliantly Chosen Name”: Shashi Tharoor In US

Shashi Tharoor led delegation is visiting the global capitals as part of the government’s big diplomatic outreach to highlight its stand on terrorism following operation Sindoor.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the all-party delegation to the US, said Operation Sindoor was a “brilliantly chosen name” and explained its significance. The delegation is visiting the global capitals as part of the government’s big diplomatic outreach to highlight its stand on terrorism following operation Sindoor.

During an interaction session at the National Press Club in the US on Wednesday (local time), Mr Tharoor noted that the colour of sindoor is not very different from the colour of blood and even used the Hindi expression “khoon ka badla khoon” and said that here it was ‘sindoor ka badla khoon’, meaning blood in response to what the terrorists have done to the sindoor.

When asked why India chose the name ‘Operation Sindoor’ for its counter-terrorism action, he responded, “Operation Sindoor, actually, I thought was a brilliantly chosen name. Sindoor, in case some Americans obviously don’t know about this, is a vermilion mark that is applied to the centre of the forehead of married women in the Hindu tradition. It’s widely practised. Some non-Hindus do it too, but more for decorative purposes, but strictly speaking, the Sindoor is applied at the time of the marriage ceremony and is worn every day thereafter by married women. So, we were very conscious of these brutal terrorists who, by the way, shot men in front of their wives and children but spared the women and when one wife screamed out, Kill me too, she was told, no, you go back and tell them what we’ve done.”

“That was why the women were spared horrendous, horrendous act. That sindoor had essentially been wiped off the foreheads of 26 Indian women, 26 I was gonna say Hindu women, but one of them actually was a Christian, but the sindoor had been wiped off the rest by these terrorist actions, and so we wanted first of all, to avenge that act of wiping off the sindoor. But, secondly, it’s no accident that the colour of the sindoor is bright vermilion red, which is not far from the colour of blood, and in many ways there is a Hindi expression that ‘khoon ka badla khoon’; here it was ‘sindoor ka badla khoon’ hoga, that is, blood in response to what they have done to the sindoor,” he added.

Shashi Tharoor said that none of the side involved in the conflict talks about the losses they faced, as the operational details are closely held with the senior military people. He talked about how Indian forces effectively struck 11 airfields of the Pakistani military, and Pakistan has publicly admitted that Indian strikes were so wide-ranging and effective that they struck from as far as Hyderabad in South Pakistan to Peshawar in the northwest.

When asked how many aircraft India lost in the conflict with Pakistan, Shashi Tharoor said, “We’re not military folks, and our military are the only ones who really keep track of all of these things. But, I think the important message that came out was whatever may or may not have happened in the course of a conflict, neither side, by the way, talks about losses very much, and that’s partially because you know very well that operational details are very closely held with the senior military people. But, I can tell you one thing, whatever may or may not have happened, look what happened on the last, what turned out to be the last night of the conflict, when India not only effectively struck 11 airfields of the Pakistani military, but there are commercially available, publicly available satellite pictures showing the extensive damage done.

“There’s been craters on the runway, there have been operational command centers that have been busted by these Indian bombs, and just yesterday the Pakistanis publicly admitted that Indian strikes were so wide-ranging and effective they struck from as far as Hyderabad in South Pakistan to Peshawar in the northwest. So it looks very clear that whatever damage the Pakistanis believe they may have inflicted on India, it wasn’t sufficient to prevent India from inflicting such extensive damage on Pakistan that they decided to request us to stop, which we very happy to do,” he added.

The delegation led by Mr Tharoor arrived in the US on Wednesday. The delegation includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita (all from BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora.

“The parliamentary delegation briefed the Caucus members on the cross-border terrorism faced by India and India’s strong and resolute stance in the fight against terror. The Congressmen expressed unequivocal and bipartisan condemnation for the terror attack in Pahalgam. They expressed support for India’s right to respond to terrorism in the spirit of zero tolerance against terrorism. The Caucus members also hailed the strong strategic partnership between India and USA,” it added.

The delegation also held a meeting with the US House Foreign Affairs Committee leadership in Washington. DC. HFAC Chairman Brian Mast, Ranking Member of the committee, Gregory Meeks, South and Central Asia Subcommittee Chair Bill Huizenga, Ranking members – Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Ami Bera, Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific Chair, Young Kim.

The Indian Embassy in the US stated, “The all-party Parliamentary delegation led by @ShashiTharoor held candid & fruitful exchange with @HouseForeign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership. Chair @RepBrianMast, Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks, South and Central Asia Subcommittee Chair @RepHuizenga, Ranking Member @RepKamlagerDove, Ranking Member @RepBera and East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee @RepYoungKim greeted the delegation.”

“The Parliamentary delegation briefed the committee members on the success of Operation Sindoor in defining a new normal in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism. The Committee Leadership condemned the Pahalgam attack unequivocally. India and USA stand together in their unwavering resolve and fight against terrorism in all its forms,” it added.

The all-party delegation arrived in the US after concluding their visit to Brazil. The delegation aims to brief key stakeholders in the US on Operation Sindoor, India’s diplomatic initiative launched to counter terrorism and disinformation following the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

As many as 26 people were killed and several others were injured in a terrorist attack in Baisaran valley of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22. Among the victims were 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. In response to the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7.

The Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists affiliated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The Indian Armed Forces responded effectively to subsequent Pakistani aggression and pounded its airbases. India and Pakistan agreed for a cessation of hostilities on May 10.
